GUIDE
IN IPOH

Most major Malaysiantowns emerged in the late
19th century. The development of the western Malay states
was initiated by Sir Frederick A. Weld, Governor of the Straits
Settlements (1880-1887).
The assassination of Perak's Resident, J.W.W. Brich, though,
had a negative impact on British policy towards the Malay
states. Sir Frederick managed to convince the Colonial Office
the British should actively promote the development of these
states.
